We all know the sorry truth. Type the words "lesbians porn" into Google and among the million trillion billion results, the last thing you'll find is porn FOR lesbians.
For years, we've been wandering in a desert of male-fantasy faux blondes with long nails, rolling around together for the delight of the hetero eyeball. Does porn for lesbians even exist? Even better, could there be any lesbian porn for lesbians by lesbians?
The answer is Yes.
Right now, right this decade, there is a surge in lesbian porn made by lesbians. At last, dyke film-makers have declared "Fuck this", and are changing the landscape of the industry. Welcome to a new age of girl-on-girl adult films.
The fire-hot selection of films below is are created by queer film makers, and star (for the most part) queer women. Real dyke porn is physically, emotionally and filmically different to faux lez porn. When it's real, ethical and female-positive, you can tell.
Edit 5th February 2013: I just read an article in Huffington Post which suggests that men who watch porm are more supportive of same-sex marriage! So now I feel I should qualify my rant against super-bleached lesbian porn: maybe long-nailed lesbian porn has its place! But political ramifications aside, I think the point still remains that "lesbian porn" is mighty different to "porn for lesbians".
An absolute phenomena, "The Crash Pad" series has taken on a life of its own.
It all started with the film "The Crash Pad" (available as a DVD on Amazon), directed by lesbian Shine Louise Houston. Shine was sick of faux lesbian porn, so she asked her friends to help her make a real lesbian porn film, with real lesbian sex scenes. She also asked her best mate Dylan Ryan to take part: the film kickstarted her career and she is now the most famous dyke porn star of all time.
The premise is deceptively simple: there's a secret apartment called the Crash Pad. If you're lucky, one day someone will give you the key. Once inside, anything can happen!
Unfortunately, "The Crash Pad" is very hard to get, due to it's popularity. If it's not available right now on Amazon, you could try Shine Houston's other famous film, Superfreak. We can't review it because we ain't seen it, but it has won awards, including "Best Dyke Scene" at the 2007 Feminist Porn Awards.

Starring out-and-proud Dylan Ryan (yes, we can't get enough of her - she also features in "The Crash Pad") and London, this film has almost combustible chemistry.
London is a dancer, who has become obsessively fascinated with her co-worker (Dylan). Try as she might, she can't stop thinking about an encounter they once had at (wait for it!) Strap-on Motel. This flick is not for the faint hearted (London does end up in a chin harness!) but the feminist director Maria Beatty brilliantly captures the sweat and intensity of claustrophobic obsession.
This film lacks the smart, self-referential sassiness of "The Wild Search" (below) and is intensely graphic. It also plays with the butch/femme dynamic, which is a bit predictable. However, it is intense, dark and emotionally-charged. If you're new to porn, start with something else, like "The Crash Pad" (above). But if you're ready to explore your dark side, stop in overnight at this motel.
The DVD is usually available online.

The Wild Search is out on its own.
If you're home with your lover, and you both want something you can laugh at (while at the same time getting turned on) then go for this flick. The premise is just so strange: a mock documentary on the dating habits of San Francisco lesbians.
The camera sneaks around corners and into bars as lesbians get off in their natural habitat. Be warned: it does get intense at some points, and the girls do strap-up for a lengthy three-way. However, intensity aside, you will simply enjoy this unique indie porn film with real lesbians having real sex.
One of my fav moments is when they send up the blonde gay-for-pay girls: this is in an unforgettably funny scene and is worth a look.
"The Wild Search" is directed by lesbian Shine Louise Houston, who cannot be beaten, and stars heaps of queer lovelies, like Courtney Trouble (who started the website No Fauxxx). Keep 'em coming, Houston. We need more from you!
Very silly, very raunchy, you'll have a giggle if nothing else.
